In my most recent of They Say I Say, Chapter 13; "They" argue that we have lost our ability to think by ourselves. Another argument is that the Internet has made us good at a certain rhetoric called kairos which basically means adjusting to our audience and adjusting our tones and techniques to get our points across. A third argument in the book is whether technologies have better or worsened our communication skills.
To a certain point I think the first argument (that we have lost our ability to think by ourselves) is true. Not completely true but true to a certain point. Many people don't analyze things(books, assignments, or anything of that matter) by themselves, they go to the Internet to see what others say about a certain things and use that as their own idea. I noticed that a lot while I was in high school. I found myself doing this when I couldn't understand something.
I find the second argument to be a bit true too. Some people understand how to adjust their tone and get their point across and be able to adjust to their audience. Some on the other hand don't.
I believe technologies have both made communication better and worse. For the better, people far away from others can talk, chat, Skype, or FaceTime. For the bad, The communication isn't always perceived the same way. Technology in communication has both its bad and good.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and when it comes to technology everything can be seen from many different perspectives. Technology can be abused and used in the right way.
I agree with what you say about how people can get lazy and not analyze. I know for a fact that I go to the internet for help. Sometimes not just for help but since I was to lazy to read the chapter I just go to sparkotes for some help.
ReplyDeleteHey Shristi! I agree with your idea on the first argument and believe that we have lost our voice when we analyze things. Usually when we are given a task or assignment, we take the easy way out in getting it done. The first thing that comes to our minds is to go to the nearest computer and just Google the topic. We disregard any other forms of gaining information and take on the opinions or voice of others. I do believe technology is a luxury but we need to stop living in excess of it.
